Nestling 300 metres above sea level, Rhiwiau is surrounded by farmland and enjoys some lovely views of open countryside looking out from the Brecon Beacons to the north and west providing a good chance of a sunset. Rhiwiau is also an ideal location for star gazing, with no light pollution.
The views to the North are of a gentle patchwork of fields dotted with sheep and cattle and an abundance of wildlife. Garden birds including woodpeckers are regular visitors to the feeding station and in summer you can enjoy the aerial display provided by our swallows and martins. We regularly see red kites, buzzards, foxes, badgers and hares.
Tiger, Pip, Bounty and Hercules (resident dogs and horses) will be waiting to say hello!
In the garden is an ancient well, believed to date from Roman times and possibly used for baptisms.
The guest lounge is in the 17th century part of the house with wood burning stove, beautiful old inglenook fireplace, part stone walls and low ceiling with exposed beams. These are thought to have been salvaged from an old ship at the time the house was built which makes them very old indeed!
The guest bedrooms are in the newer section of the house, accessed through an ancient doorway at the side of the inglenook and via the original stone stairway. The stairs may be difficult for people with mobility problems.
Guests will enjoy a spacious “L” shaped room with great views to the north and west, kingsize bed, TV, tea making facilities and comfy seating making this a cosy and comfy room to sit in and enjoy the glorious views. The kingsize bed can easily be divided to make two single beds if required.
A second guest room sleeps 2 people (in king size or single beds). For 6 people, the main room can be configured with 4 single beds.
Interaction with Guests
Guests will be given full access to the old characterful lounge in the 17th century part of the house. This room will not be used by us during your stay although we will pass through from time to time in order to use the stairs (and to say hello!).
Our living room is in a separate lounge at the north end of the house, we understand that you may want privacy and quietness, but we are also happy to chat and share our knowledge of the area with you. Dinner can be provided by prior arrangement for a small extra charge or we can give you a lift down to the village pub!
You will have exclusive access to the shower room and WC during your stay with easy access just a few feet from your bedroom door and these facilities will be for your sole use. You will not be sharing the space with people that you don’t know.
